ABOUT THE ARTIST
Brett Piva @brettpiva
Brett Piva is a Newcastle based painter, sculptor, installation artist and muralist. Piva’s work intersects two worlds; the natural landscape of the Australian bush and the manufactured surfaces of urbanised space. Diverse organic markings sourced from sojourns in remote environments are replicated on manmade surfaces; gnarling curls of bark against the perfection of cut glass, or the lines of leaves on brick and mortar. The organic and synthetic are constantly at play and reflecting the other’s attributes.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
My Japan Artist in Residency in February 2020, taught me an important lesson. To connect with the environment closer to where one lives. With the restrictions encountered upon my return to Australia, I was more enticed to explore the environment closer to my home in Newcastle.
This work shares natural forms that are shared closer to the surface of Eucalypts and the reflections seen within streams of water. All elements are painted using habitual tools alongside natural handmade brushes and Eucalypt bark from Glenrock State Conservation Area.
